Building a Just Future: From Hope to Action Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Glossary of Terms FRIDAY KEYNOTE
Dr. Ransby is not only a historian and writer but also a long-time activist. She was deeply involved in the anti-Apartheid/ Free South Africa movement in the 1980s and later co-founded a number of organizations including: The Ella-Baker Nelson Mandela Center, Ella’s Daughters, and African American Women in Defense of Ourselves. She is a founding member of the national organization Scholars for Social Justice and works closely with The Movement for Black Lives and the multi-racial coalition, The Rising Majority.
SATURDAY KEYNOTE
Dr. Melina Abdullah is a recognized expert on race, gender, class, and social movements. She was among the original group of organizers that convened to form Black Lives Matter and continues to serve as a Los Angeles chapter leader. Professor Abdullah is a womanist scholar-activist, understanding the role that she plays in the academy as intrinsically linked to broader struggles for the liberation of oppressed people. Professor Abdullah is a leader in the fight for Ethnic Studies in the K-12 and university systems and was a part of the historic victory that made Ethnic Studies a requirement in the Los Angeles Unified School District, also serving on the Taskforce for the Advancement of Ethnic Studies for the California State University system. Who Should Attend? All faculty members, union and academic senate leaders, student leaders and those who work in categorically funded programs are encouraged to attend. This is your opportunity to network and share ideas with colleagues across the state, participate in professional development sessions, and hear from top decision-makers on policy and budget.
