Sarah Thompson
Las Positas College

Please meet Sarah Thompson, a dedicated educator with over 20 years of experience, specializing in Sociology and Global Studies at Las Positas College. Holding a Master's degree from Rutgers University, Sarah's passion for education is evident in her roles as the current Co-Chair for the FACCC Legislative & Budget Committee and as a member of the FACCC Board of Governors.

Sarah's journey into higher education was inspired by the influential professors she encountered during her college years. Their impact, coupled with her realization of the transformative power of knowledge in social justice movements, fueled her desire to pursue a career in academia. As Sarah puts it, she was driven by a youthful ambition to change the world, a goal she feels grateful to have achieved.

Embodying her favorite motto, "Not my circus, not my monkeys," Sarah tackles life with a healthy dose of humor and perspective. In her spare time, she enjoys a variety of interests, including traveling, skiing, wine tasting, and indulging in cultural experiences like theater and museum visits. In between her scholarly pursuits, she entertains the comical idea of breaking a world record for consecutive days refusing to do Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs). Her playful spirit shines through, even in her exasperation at having to endure another Superbowl with the 49ers.

In her teaching career, Sarah finds immense reward in working with community college students, whose infectious hopes and dreams serve as constant reminders of what is possible. She cherishes the opportunity to witness their growth and achievements, with memorable interactions including attending weddings and graduations, as well as facilitating former students' transitions into teaching careers. Sarah is passionate about advocating for positive change within the California Community Colleges, particularly in reforming the funding formula. While reflecting on her career, she emphasizes the importance of tenure as a responsibility rather than a reward and encourages new community college professors to embrace this mindset

In essence, Sarah Thompson embodies a blend of dedication, humor, and passion, making her a valued member of both the academic community and the FACCC leadership. To those starting their career as a community college professor, Sarah offers this bit of advice:

Tenure is a responsibility, not a reward.
